An independent preparatory school for 3 to 13 year olds, located in the beautiful island of Alderney, in the Channel Islands |
Academics Children are carefully prepared for their entry into senior school be it by 11+ Common Entrance or Scholarship examination and gain entry to some of the top single-sex and coeducational schools in the UK. Ormer House's record in preparing boys and girls for their senior schools is enviable. Six classrooms are fully equipped with computer, TV and video facilities. Each year group has its own form teacher who teaches English and Mathematics for the first two lessons each morning. Teaching in the junior and middle school is undertaken by the form teacher supplemented by specialists in French, Music and Sports. From the age of 7, when children move into the senior section of the school, the teaching of basics is undertaken by the form teacher with specialists teaching History, Geography, Science, Music, French, Latin, Sports, ICT and Art. Children are not streamed at Ormer House but the importance of individual tuition, both in and outside of the classroom, is recognized as essential if children are to realize their talents to the full. Children do not automatically change form at the beginning of the academic year. A small school situation allows children, especially those in the junior and middle forms, to join a more senior form when ready and at any time during the year. Prep is completed during the school day and only children in the last two years are expected to complete any academic study after 5.00 pm. Reading is seen as the single most important academic pursuit. To this end all children spend 20 minutes a day after lunch in a dedicated reading session. Apart from this organized reading session, pupils are encouraged to grasp other opportunities during wet breaks and when completing a classroom assignment early. All children above the age of 4 are taken to the Island Library regularly - those above the age of 7 attend every week on a Friday. The full range of academic studies is taught, together with the techniques and methods of organisation and memory retrieval known as `study skills'. In addition, set times are allocated for Art, Music, Drama, ICT, P.E. and Games which includes swimming, thus providing full breadth to the curriculum. |
